Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of increasing traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

It’s not just the quantity of the traffic, it’s also the quality.

You can spend a good deal of money on advertising to drive traffic to your website, but the organic traffic that comes through SEO is free.

With these six tips you can begin optimizing your search engine results and start driving quality traffic to your website.

1. Make your website mobile-friendly

First and foremost, make sure your website is designed with the mobile user experience in mind.

As of 2016, 60% of all searches come from mobile devices, and Google prioritizes the mobile versions of websites.

2. Use free SEO tools

Speaking of free tools, make sure to take advantage of the many free SEO tools offered around the web.

Google has several free tools available, like Analytics, Keyword Planner, and Trends.

Radiant energy, living green.

Beyond Google, tools like SEO Webpage Analyzer allows you to examine the structure and build quality of your webpages, while SEMRush allows you to monitor yours and your competitors websites.

Use these tools to find areas where your website can improve, as well as to see what your competitors are doing.

3. Blog consistently and engage with your commenters

Valuable content is vital in driving traffic to your website. Consistent blog posts will draw traffic and commenters.

Engaging with commenters is vital. Make sure comments are enabled for all blogs and respond to all comments, even on older posts.

Also, take care that your interactions with commenters positively reflect the values of your business.

Creating content and positively engaging with your visitors will not only increase traffic but can help build a community around your brand.

4. Use long-tail keywords

When blogging, take into account that most search phrases will be longer than one or two keywords. Try using phrases with at least 3 or 4 words. These are considered long-tail keywords and generate more specific traffic.

For example, a search for “web design” would bring up less specific results than a search for “why is web design important for business” which would result in blogs and articles that could bring more traffic to your site.

Plan your headings and blog titles with long-tailed keywords in mind. The free Google Keyword Planner tool can help.

5. Share on Social Media

You’re probably already active on social media if you have a business website.

You can use your presence to improve your SEO ranking by sharing your website content on social media and encouraging followers to share.

Make this as easy as possible by including social media sharing icons on your content, and likewise share links to your content on all your social media pages.

6. Look at the Competition

It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

While that may or may not be true, it’s always a good idea to see what’s working (and not working) for the competition.

Check the sites of your high ranking competitors and see if there are ways you can imitate what they are doing and improve your ranking.

Alternately, it can be valuable to check lower ranking competitors to see if you can identify what’s not working for them and avoid doing the same thing.
